| In the cellular communications field, reverse engineering of existing communication systems is sometimes the key to a successful operation. In the past this was accomplished using a myriad of tools that utilized cellular phones connected to a laptop computer. The phone would register on the network and record the collected information on the laptop. Because the phone must makes its presence known to the network, this type of measurement is known as an active measurement. With advancements in technology, this can now be accomplished using other devices that are passive and don't transmit any information to the network. |
| There are advantages and disadvantages to both active systems and passive systems. First, active phone based systems require working, valid SIM cards in order to allow the mobile to register on the network. Second, the mobile phone can only measure one network provider at a time. However, there are specific reasons to have an active system as not all functionality is available from a passive system. |
| QRC developed a totally passive measurement system to gather the same information from the network, as well as additional information that can't be gathered from a phone, and present those results in an immediately useable format. |
